Junior RNCM
“Before They Become Famous XVI”
Another visit by students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. See their previous concert in March 2022 for an idea of the sort of entertainment they provide. This season’s students will be different, but the performances promise to be just as exciting.
The artists (announced 18th February) will be Heather Stark (Harp), Jeremy Bailey (Flute), Claire Marsden (French Horn), Ella Hodgson-Laws (Violin) and James Marriott (Voice).

Brief Report “on the night”
An absolutely splendid concert attended by over 60 people. The highlights (for me personally) were:
Jeremy Bailey’s beautiful flute sonata by Taktakishvili.
Heather Stark’s enchanting harp rendering of Hasselmans’ Priere.
Claire Marsden’s “Lone Call and Charge” hauntingly played from another room.
Ella Hodgson-Laws’ solo violin Preludio by Bach.
James Marriott’s strong voice blasting out “What have I done” from Les Miserables.

Press Report
We have become accustomed to excellent performances by students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. This year’s group of five were exceptional and provided a fitting tribute to Karen Humphreys, the Head of the JRNCM, who is moving to pastures new. David Jones provided piano accompaniment as required.
Claire Marsden (16) began the concert with a rousing performance from Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1. Later she gave haunting renditions of ‘Lone Call and Charge’ by Bissill, played off stage, and the ‘Horn Lokk’ by Berge.
Flautist Jeremy Bailey (16) played Taktakoshvili’s flute sonata beautifully and came back with an absorbing piece called ‘Airborne’, by Schocker.
The singer this year was James Marriott (18). He showed a great range of expression in songs from ‘The Gondoliers’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Sweeney Todd’, ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Dear Evan Hansen’.
Violinist Ella Hodgson-Laws (17) played Kodály’s ‘Adagio’ and the ‘Rhapsody No. 1’ by Bartok with aplomb and captivated the audience with the ‘Preludio’ from Bach’s Partita No. 3 for solo violin.
The harp has a unique, ethereal sound, certainly in the hands of Heather Stark (16). She played ‘Prière’ (Hasselmans) and ‘Chanson Dans La Nuit’ (Salzedo) in the first half and ‘Automne’ (Grandjany) and ‘My Favourite Things’ (Rogers) later.
