Brief Report “on the night”

Another popular concert with over 50 people present. All 5 artists were very high quality, and the audience applauded  loudly after each piece. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Lewis Barton started the evening with a couple of excellent trumpet pieces, on 2 different sizes of trumpet. Luca Kelly began with his own lovely slightly jazzy arrangement of  Stella by Starlight. Josephine McEvey then sang four very different songs in her beautiful strong soprano voice, of which Shenandoah was probably the most popular. Cameron Liu astonished us, especially with his very lively rendition of a fast Paganini piece. Jack Callaghan brought the first half to a close with an equally lively rendition of a Tarantelle.

Amazingly the second half was even better!

Press Report
This year’s group of students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music captivated the audience at the Middlewich and District Concerts Society concert in the manner to which we have become accustomed. David Jones provided piano accompaniment as required.
Lewis Barton (16) rapidly dispelled any nerves to give a rousing performance of a movement from Hummel’s trumpet concerto and pieces by Honegger and Bozza.
Jazz pianist Luca Kelly (16) produced his own gently undulating arrangements of pieces by Victor Young, Billy Strayhorne and Leslie Bricusse.
The singer this year was Josephine McEvey (17). What a voice! She sang with commendable clarity in Italian, French and English, beginning with “Here amid the shady woods” by Handel and finishing with an aria from “Gli Ugnotti” by Meyerbeer. She also sang pieces by Viardot and Kern and gave a superb rendition of “Shenandoah”.
The diminutive figure of pianist Cameron Liu (11) provided the surprise of the night, with commanding performances of a Haydn sonata, a Schubert Impromptu and two of Liszt’s Paganini studies, none of which are for the faint-hearted!
The fifth student was Jack Callaghan (17). He started with a lively rendition of Sarasate’s “Introduction and Tarantelle”, continued with a Bach violin sonata and finished with an evocative performance of Franck’s violin sonata.
