Press Report

Can it be a coincidence that harp and heart sound similar? The effect of the former on the latter was ably demonstrated by Harp2Harp. The two harpists, Eleanor Hudson and Lauren Scott, who worked together with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, produced an enchanting and diverse concert. The sensitivity of the harp to atmospheric conditions resulted in several re-tunings and even a broken string, quickly replaced, but did not dampen our enjoyment.

The first half began with the “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by Handel, followed by “Chanson de Matin” and “Chanson de Nuit” (Elgar). “Duo en Fantasie” (Francois Nadermann) rested easily on the ear since the composer was himself a harpist. Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite” was suitably atmospheric, and Bernard Andres’ “Parvis” provided a dramatic conclusion.

The “Carmen Fantasy”, which Thomas arranged from the opera by Bizet, opened the second half. “Eine Kleine Nacht Music” (Mozart) is always a joy. Less familiar were “Preseli Skies and African Reflections” (Monika Stadler) and “Latin Suite” by Mike Cornick, which swayed us with dance rhythms and different techniques. A lively rendition of “Libertango” by Piazzola brought the concert to a satisfying conclusion. Well, almost, for we were sent on our way with “My Favourite Things” on our lips as an added encore!
