Junior RNCM
“Before They Become Famous XIX”
Another visit by students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. See their previous concert in March 2025 for an idea of the sort of entertainment they provide. This season’s students will be different, but the performances promise to be just as exciting. There will be 4 students this year (announced 7th March): cello, oboe, saxophone and voice (soprano).

Brief Report “on the night”
Another splendid concert attended by around 55 people. The highlights (for me personally) were:
- Jayvas Wong’s amazing fast saxophone runs in the opening Carnival of Venice.
- Emily Edge’s unaccompanied singing of the folk song The Parting Glass.
- Oliver Pearce’s intense dramatic cello in Shostakovich’s Sonata.
- Vinchy Ho’s haunting oboe in Pierne’s Fantasie-Pastorale.
Press Report
The Middlewich and District Concerts Society has become accustomed to excellent performances by students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and this concert was no exception. The Head of the JRNCM, Aled Tudor, introduced the students and gave an insight into the work of the college and the commitment of the parents. The four students were Jayvas Wong (saxophone), Emily Edge (voice), Oliver Pearce (cello) and Vinchy Ho (oboe). Pete Durrant provided the piano accompaniment.
Jayvas opened the concert with a dazzling performance of “Carnaval of Venice” by Jules Demersseman, his fingers being a blur at times! Later he played Eugène Bozza’s “Aria”, which provided a complete contrast and aptly demonstrated his musicality and control.
Emily sang a wide range of songs and arias by Pergolesi, Handel, Ireland, Clara Schumann and Rodgers and Hammerstein. She had quite a delicate approach with just enough vibrato to suit the music. The highlight was a stunning, unaccompanied performance of a traditional Scottish song, “The Parting Glass”.
Fauré’s “Romance” was played with great feeling by Oliver. This was in complete contrast to a dramatic performance of two movements from Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata, ably revealing the turbulence in this composer’s music.
Vinchy gave a haunting performance of “Fantasie-Pastorale” by Pierné and concluded the concert with two movements from the Saint-Saens Oboe Sonata. This was one of a number of chamber pieces Saint-Saens wrote towards the end of his life and Vinchy really got to the heart of this introspective work.
