Brief Report “on the night”
A really good concert, which started well and got even better. The first half highlight was probably Saint-Saens “The Elephant” on the Double Base.
After the interval all the performers were more relaxed and visibly enjoying themselves. They had each saved the best for last. Matt Still-Blundell’s rendition of “Spanish Romanza” (anonymous) on the guitar was exquisite. Saffron Doherty sang a great “Voi che Sapete” (from Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro”) and then finished with a full rendition (including the first verse) of Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow”. Tom Amigoni gave us a thrilling Piazolla’s “Kicho” on Double Bass, much helped by David Jones on Piano. Finally Alexandra Clarke’s flute got faster and faster as she thrilled us with Taffanel’s “Grande Fantasie on Mignon”.

Press Report
Once again the group of students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music captivated the audience at the Middlewich and District Concerts Society concert. David Jones provided piano accompaniment where appropriate.
The singer this year was Saffron Doherty (19). What a voice! She began with the aria “Laschia ch’io pianga” by Handel, followed by songs by Thomas Dunhill and Ivor Gurney. Later she sang “Voi che sapete” from the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, “Die Nacht” (Richard Strauss) and finally a heart-felt rendition of “Over the Rainbow” (Harold Arlen).
Matt Still-Blundell (18) was the only student to introduce the music. He captivated the audience with “Adelita” and “Gran Vals” by Tarrega, “Sons de Carilhões” (Pernambuco), “Canción del Emperador” (Luys de Narváez) and “Mazurka-Choro” (Villa-Lobos), before finishing with an exquisite “Spanish Romanza”.
Tom Amigoni (16) played the double-bass. He gave us Fauré’s “Sicilenne” and “Après un Rêve”, followed by a properly earth-shaking “Elephant” from the Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens and a thrilling “Kicho” by Piazzolla, full of tango rhythms.
Alexandra Clarke (18) amply demonstrated the technicality of playing the flute with a competition piece by Fauré and the first movement of a Suite by Widor, before concluding the concert with an extraordinary performance of the “Grande Fantasie on Mignon” by Taffanel.
