Camira Wind Trio
(Flute, Clarinet & Bassoon)

Camira Wind Trio is Emma Haughton (Clarinet), Charlotte Curwen (Bassoon) and Emily Doan (Flute). The trio formed in early 2018 from a desire to perform in a chamber music setting and to explore the wind repertoire, much of which is rarely performed. Alongside their recital performances they are passionate about bringing live music to new audiences through outreach work and concerts within the community. “Camira” is an Aboriginal name for girls meaning “Of the wind”.

Brief Report “on the night”

It was great to finally hold our first concert since March 2020, even with all the changes made necessary for covid-safety. There were bottles of pump-action hand-sanitizer, a recommendation to wear masks except when seated (and a few spare masks available for anybody who had forgotten theirs). The ticket seller even wore disposable gloves as an extra precaution. The chairs were laid out in pairs with a gap between each pair, and the rows were spaced a full metre apart. Refreshments were served in disposable cups and the biscuits were individually wrapped. But enough of that, how about the concert itself.

Camira Wind Trio were obviously very pleased to be playing their first concert since last Christmas (apparently it took place the day before Boris changed the rules pre-Christmas!). They were all smiles and laughs with really friendly introductions and explanations of the music they were playing. Three more pieces of music had been added since their programme was announced in September. The programme as actually played was therefore :

Mozart: Marriage of Figaro – Overture (arr.)
Mozart: Divertimento no. 2 for 3 basset horns (arr.)
Muczynski: Fragments
Ibert: Cinq Pieces en Trio
Vivaldi: Winter (arr.)

Canteloube: Rustiques mov 1
Bizet: Carmen Suite
Mascagni: Intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana”
Milhaud: Suite d’apres Corrette
Stravinsky: Pastorale
Debussy: Clair de Lune
Herold: Clog Dance from “La Fille Mal Gardée”

The concert opened with 2 enchanting light Mozart pieces, which displayed Camira’s playing to advantage. Then came 2 works which both consisted of several short movements, but were very different. Finally, taking us to the interval, was the last movement (“Winter”) of the ever-popular Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”.

The second half began with French Music, including Bizet’s very popular “Carmen Suite”. Next came 2 contrasting 20th Century pieces. Finally the concert ended with a fun piece which included some tapping on a block of wood by the bassoonist.

The audience really appreciated their playing, clapping loudly at the end of each piece, which made the performers smile even more warmly with the occasional laugh and giggle. All in all a really great concert to start our 32nd season.
