Trio Chuva
(Guitar, Mandolin & Double Bass)

Trio Chuva are a Manchester based folk/classical trio that was founded in 2018 by performers Rafael Onyett (guitar) and Borna Kuca (guitar/mandolin), whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music with the renowned guitarist Craig Ogden. In 2022, Chuva expanded with the addition of double bassist George Burrage. The trio quickly developed a strong musical chemistry and have since performed frequently across the UK. They entertained us with a great concert on Saturday 8th October 2022.

Brief Report “on the night”

Another splendid concert with very varied pieces, mainly from the Balkans. First came two contrasting compositions by Miroslav Tadic; the first slow and thoughtful, the second up-tempo. Two pieces by the Argentinian Astor Piazzolla followed; a tango then a faster piece. A Portuguese piece (whose title means “Salad Days”) by Carlos Paredes was rather different from the surrounding Balkan pieces. The first half ended with a Macedonia piece in 7/8 time and  a lively Bulgarian Dance.

After the break the pieces were even more varied starting with a beautiful Argentinian piece by Astor Piazzolla which was followed by an English piece by John Dowland, then came a lively Balkan dance. The next piece was a highlight, being a beautiful free arrangement of Eric Satie’s “Gnossienne No 1”. Another piece in 7/8 time (which included use of a Violin) and a fast very intricate piece by Miroslav Tadic closed the concert.

Duo Chuva opened last season’s concerts and they returned as Trio Chuva to close this season. They have maintained their relaxed style and fantastic musicality. The Trio comprises Rafael Onyett, who played the guitar and introduced the music with commendable clarity, Borna Kuca (mandolin and guitar), and George Burrage, whose fingers seemed to pass over the strings of his double bass in a blur.

Rafael hails originally from Latin America, Borna from Croatia and George from England. The programme was quite wide-ranging, reflecting their origins.

The concert began and ended with pieces by Miroslav Tadić (Zajdi Zajdi, Pajdushka and Gajdarsko Oro). We were also treated to three pieces by Astor Piazzolla (Oblivion, Zita and La Muerte Del Angel). John Dowland’s Flow My Tears provided an oasis of calm.  They make their own arrangements of the music and played their compelling version of the first of Erik Satie’s Gnossienne. There were several traditional dances from the Balkans, some in 7/8 time and a challenge for the brain! In complete contrast was the serenity of Verdes Anos by Carlos Paredes. Although much of the music was unknown to most of the audience that did not seem to matter, such was the enthusiastic response.
